iasg weekends: jamie shaka

Continuing our iasg weekends residents series, it’s the turn of Jamie from Glasgow duo, Shaka Loves You.

how did you get into music/djing?

I got into music thanks to my mum and her CD collection. I’d pick random ones from the shelf and listen to them, some I didn’t like, but some I loved and kept playing them over and over. I got into DJing through listening to Radio 1 as a teenager – the late night shows like Pete Tong and Judge Jules were my gateway into DJing and dance music.

what do you enjoy most about playing iasg weekends?

It’s a really nice vibe in there and it’s just great to be able to play more soulful music and dig a little deeper into my crates.

what song/mixtape changed your life?

The mixtapes that most influenced me growing up were probably 2manyDJs’ As Heard on Radio Soulwax and Krafty Kuts’ Instant Party.

what’s your favourite drink while playing at iasg?

Nothing beats a nice Negroni!

how would you describe glasgow’s music/nightlife scene?

Varied and vibrant! It doesn’t matter what type of music you’re into, there’s usually something on somewhere that you can go and check out. I think we’re really lucky to have such a rich musical history here too, Glasgow’s world famous for some of its clubs and venues.
