iasg weekends: dj mash

This week we got up close and personal with one of our much-loved resident DJs, as part of our new iasg weekends series.

The catch of the day is DJ MASH.

how did you get into music?

I was into music ever since I remember. The love affair started with collecting records, djing at school and college discos. For a while, I was part of Jengaheads along with Ali Campbell.

For the past 20 years, I’ve been djing and producing as MASH all over the world, with tracks on Toolroom, Glasgow Underground, Optimo, and more. I released a track with Idris Elba on vocals, Optimo put one of my tracks on their compilation and had one of my edits played by Luke Una on Worldwide FM. Currently, I am playing at gigs and festivals in my Compact Disco Defender, a converted Land Rover with a DJ box on the back.

what do you enjoy most about playing iasg weekends?

I love the visionary Danley Sound Labs, it’s so crisp and clear. I enjoy being able to ply my trade to a brilliantly mixed crowd of clubbers, diners, hotel guests, and cocktail drinkers (even celebrities sometimes), all looking for that little bit more.

what song/mixtape changed your life?

The Andrew Weatherall’s Screamadelica and One Dove era was pivotal for me. He continued to influence me for nearly three decades, he was an infinitely talented DJ and producer. I count myself lucky enough to DJ beside him a few times – he was a very witty guy and always great company.

what’s your favourite drink while playing at iasg?

A mocha (no sugar).

how would you describe Glasgow’s music/nightlife scene?

Glasgow had always a rich music/nightlife scene. I guess this is largely down to the poor weather, people stay in and make noise.
